Linear Pendants Over Kitchen Islands: Length, Output and Spacing

Kitchen island lighting is the one place in a home where a fixture answers to a countertop rather than a ceiling. Length, output and spacing all get measured against the island itself — and getting those three numbers wrong is what makes a pendant look either stranded at the ends or oversized for the room.

The Three Numbers to Settle First

Length. The combined width of the fixtures should span roughly one-half to two-thirds of the island's length, with even margins left at each end (Lumens, kitchen pendant guide). On a six-foot island that means 36 to 48 inches of total fixture length — not the 80 inch bar that swallows the counter at home.

Spacing. For multiple pendants, 24 to 30 inches between centres is the standard range for most kitchen islands (Lightopia, September 2026; Light Fixtures USA, July 2026), with 24 to 36 inches as the wider working window (Philips Hue, January 2026). It also decides one bar versus two: two 31.5 inch fixtures 24 to 30 inches apart give 63 inches of glow with a gap between them, while a single bar stays inside the half-to-two-thirds rule only up to about a 90 inch island.

Height. Hang the bottom of the fixture 30 to 36 inches above the countertop (Letifly, April 2026), adding about 3 inches per extra foot of ceiling height so it stays visually connected to the island rather than floating (Philips Hue, January 2026).

Linear Tube Light: A Suspended Bar on Leather Straps

The Linear Tube Light suspends a metal-and-acrylic LED tube on leather straps for a modern minimalist statement, with a 360-degree glow that lights a dining table or kitchen island evenly rather than in a single spot underneath.

It comes in two lengths — Small at L31.5 inches (80 cm) and 32W, and Large at L45.3 inches (115 cm) and 46W — on SMD LEDs with a 59 inch (150 cm) adjustable cord and AC90-260V wiring. The body is gold or black, with three-colour switchable or remote dimmable output, priced from $188 to $298. The 45.3 inch Large lands at roughly two-thirds of a 68 inch island — the top of the recommended range — while the 31.5 inch Small suits a compact island or a spaced pair.

Vintage Bar Light: Four Lengths, Lower Draw

The Vintage Bar Light hangs a linear textured acrylic bar that glows through 360 degrees, a classic-modern centrepiece spreading even light over dining areas, kitchen islands and offices.

Its range is the wider of the two, covering a small galley island to a long run: L31.5 inches (80 cm) at 12W, L39.4 inches (100 cm) at 16W, L47.2 inches (120 cm) at 24W, and L59 inches (150 cm) at 30W. The body is gold or black with three-colour switchable output, priced from $216 to $459. Because the draw per inch is lower than the tube above, this is the bar to choose when you want length without a bright wash — a long island in an open-plan room where 46W would compete with the living space. If you want a softer background glow rather than bright task light, take the lower-wattage bar for the length you need and put the task light on the range hood instead.

FAQ

How long should a pendant be for a six-foot island?

Aim for 36 to 48 inches of combined fixture length, which is half to two-thirds of 72 inches. One 45-inch bar or two 31.5-inch bars both fit that range.

How far apart should island pendants be?

24 to 30 inches between centres in most kitchens, up to 36 inches on larger islands, with even margins left at both ends.

How high should pendants hang above a kitchen island?

30 to 36 inches above the countertop, measured from the bottom of the fixture, plus roughly 3 inches for every extra foot of ceiling height.

An island is where the arithmetic of lighting is most visible — the wrong length is obvious from the doorway. Browse the full long bar pendant collection to compare lengths and wattages, or read our guides to linear bar pendants for long tables and choosing a statement pendant for your island.
